Philippine Bandurria

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The bandurria originated in Spain during the 14th century in a form having 12 strings in six double-strung unison courses. The 14-string Philippine variant, developed sometime during the 17th-18th centuries also has six courses, but with the first three triple-strung in unison, the next two double-strung and the lowest course a single string. Its range is about an octave above that of the guitar and it is tuned in fourths.

A rather pretty piece of wood – the grain of the back and sides reveals that they are carved out of a single piece of wood like a dugout canoe rather than made of separate pieces for the rims and back glued together at the edges.
